20/09/2009 - Builders' Merchant give war memorial a boost
A campagin to build a memorial to Wearside's fallen heros has received a boost thanks to Thompson Building Centres.
The company has provided a home for the Brothers in Arms charity which includes a free fully equipped office at its HQ at Commercial Road, Sunderland to use as the centre for its fund raising efforts.
Managing director Anne Ganley has also promised Brothers in Arms full use of the company's resources to help them reach their goal.
Set up by families of five former service personel, the charity aims to raise £50,000 to help build a permanent memorial wall for all servicemen and women from Sunderland and East Durham who have lost their lives in combat or training exercises.
"The young servicemen and women of our region deserve to be remembered by everyone because they've lost their lives while servicing their country," said Anne.
"Honouring their memory is the very least we can do and we want to do whatever we can to help the parents of these brave men and women acheive their goal to see service men and women past and future publically recognised."
Anne has also promised to donate up to £10,000 worth of building materials to help the creation of the memorial.
